Melbourne is Australia’s capital of food, coffee, sport and culture, with a compact, walkable city centre and free trams. Where you stay shapes your trip – the CBD for shopping and laneways, Albert Park and St Kilda Road for the lake and the Grand Prix, East Melbourne and Cremorne for the MCG and Melbourne Park, or Fitzroy for cafés and street life. Our Melbourne apartments and rooms are listed below.
Best areas to stay in Melbourne
- Melbourne CBD: Collins Street, Bourke Street Mall, Chinatown, Queen Victoria Market and the famous laneways – everything within walking distance and inside the free tram zone.
- St Kilda Road & Albert Park: beside Albert Park Lake and the Grand Prix circuit, close to the Botanic Gardens and St Kilda beach.
- East Melbourne: leafy streets by Parliament Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens, a short walk to the MCG and Melbourne Park.
- Fitzroy: Melbourne’s creative heart, with Brunswick Street cafés, vintage shops and street art.
- West Melbourne & Cremorne: great-value bases near Queen Victoria Market and Marvel Stadium, or Richmond and the sports precinct.
Getting in from the airport
Melbourne Airport is about 25–40 minutes from the CBD by road. The SkyBus runs frequently to Southern Cross Station, and taxis and rideshare are easy to find. Qatar Airways flies direct between Doha and Melbourne. We can help arrange airport transfers on request.
Getting around
- Free Tram Zone: trams are free within the CBD, including Flinders Street, Docklands and Queen Victoria Market.
- myki card: one card for trams, trains and buses beyond the free zone.
- On foot: the CBD grid and its laneways are easy to walk.
Halal food and family travel
Melbourne has a large Muslim community, with halal restaurants across the city and in suburbs such as Coburg, Brunswick and Dandenong, and mosques in many areas. Parks, the Melbourne Zoo, the aquarium and the beaches make it very family-friendly, and apartments with full kitchens suit families who like to cook.
When to visit Melbourne
- June to August: winter, with cool days around the mid-teens °C – the best-value time and a refreshing escape from the Gulf summer.
- Early April: the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park (4 April 2027).
- March to September: AFL football season, ending with the Grand Final in late September.
- January and November: the Australian Open and the Melbourne Cup – Melbourne’s busiest, priciest weeks.
Easy day trips
