Why go: Antalya (Lara) for Gulf families
Antalya sits on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, backed by the Taurus mountains, and combines sandy beaches, waterfalls, an atmospheric old town and ancient ruins within easy reach. The Lara and Kundu coast on the east side is built for families, with long beaches, parks and plenty of restaurants, and many Gulf visitors come back year after year. It works for a week of relaxed sea-and-sun time, or as a base for day trips.
Best time to visit
- April to June: warm, green and comfortable, with the sea warming up.
- July and August: hot and humid, ideal for the beach and pool, but plan sightseeing for early morning or evening.
- September to November: the sea stays warm and crowds ease, which many families find the sweet spot.
- December to February: mild but cooler and rainier, better for sightseeing than swimming.
Getting there from Doha and the GCC
Qatar Airways has operated a nonstop Doha to Antalya service of roughly three hours and fifty minutes. In the schedule we saw it ran five times a week and seemed to be seasonal, so confirm the days for your dates. Otherwise, travellers usually connect through Istanbul or another Turkish or Gulf hub. From other GCC cities, compare nonstop and one-stop options, as summer schedules are usually busier.
Visa basics
Rules change, so treat this as a starting point. At the time of writing (November 2026), citizens of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman can enter Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days, and Kuwaiti citizens are listed as visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. We could not confirm the current rule for Qatari citizens, so please check with the Turkish embassy. A passport valid for at least six months is commonly required. Non-citizen residents of GCC countries may have different requirements. Always check the latest rules with the Turkish authorities or your airline.
Where to stay
- Lara: the family beach district, with sandy beaches, parks, shops and a wide choice of restaurants. About 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, with a resort feel.
- Kundu: right next to Lara and closest to the airport, with a calm, spacious feel and easy access to the beach strip. A convenient choice if you want short transfers.
- Kaleiçi: Antalya’s old town, with narrow lanes, historic houses, the harbour and Hadrian’s Gate. Charming and walkable, but with cobbles and slopes that can be difficult with strollers.
Things to do with family
- Spend days on the Lara and Konyaaltı beaches, with calm water and beachfront facilities.
- Visit the Lower Düden Waterfalls, where water drops straight into the sea.
- Walk Kaleiçi and the old harbour, and take a boat trip along the coast.
- Visit the Antalya Aquarium, popular with younger children.
- Take a day trip to the Roman theatre at Aspendos or the ruins at Perge.
- Ride the cable car at Tünektepe for panoramic views over the bay.
- Visit a theme or water park near Belek if you have time, and check opening dates in advance.
Halal food and prayer
Turkey has a Muslim-majority population, and local cuisine such as kebabs, pide, lahmacun, mezze and baklava is mostly built around halal meat. Lara and Kundu are used to Gulf visitors, and many restaurants there offer Arabic menus. Halal practice can still vary, so ask if it matters to you, especially in international or hotel-style venues. Mosques are found throughout the city, and the call to prayer is easy to hear. Dress modestly when entering a mosque, and use a prayer-times app.
Getting around
Taxis, private transfers and ride-hailing apps are the easiest options for families, and renting a car is popular for day trips. Typical drive times from Antalya airport are about 10 to 20 minutes to Kundu, 20 to 30 minutes to Lara and 25 to 35 minutes to Kaleiçi, depending on traffic. Local buses and minibuses are cheap but can be crowded in summer. Use the meter in taxis, or agree the price first, and ask your host to arrange a pickup for late arrivals.
Practical tips
- Bring sun protection, hats and plenty of water in summer.
- Keep some local currency (Turkish lira) for small shops and taxis.
- Wear comfortable shoes for Kaleiçi’s cobbles and slopes.
- Book day trips with reputable operators and confirm child policies in advance.
- Bargaining is common in bazaars, but prices in shops and restaurants are usually fixed.
- Carry your passport or a copy with you, and keep your stay address handy.
