Dubai Travel Guide for Gulf Families

Why go: Dubai for Gulf families

Dubai is a short hop from Doha and the rest of the GCC, yet it feels like a different world: beaches, waterfront walks, huge parks, family attractions and some of the best shopping anywhere. Arabic is widely understood, services run smoothly, and the city is easy to navigate with children. It works as a long weekend, a school-holiday trip or a base for a longer stay, and the neighbourhood you choose changes the feel of the trip completely.

Best time to visit

  • November to March: the most comfortable weather, ideal for beaches, parks, outdoor markets and desert trips.
  • April and October: warm, and still good for early-morning and evening outings.
  • May to September: very hot and humid. Plan around air-conditioned attractions, malls and pools, and keep beach and outdoor time for early morning or after sunset.

Seasonal attractions, such as outdoor festival villages, usually run in the cooler months, so check opening dates before you plan around them.

Getting there from Doha and the GCC

Doha to Dubai is a short flight of roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, and several airlines have served the route, so compare schedules and fares for your dates. From other GCC cities there are frequent short flights as well, and overland travel from Saudi Arabia or Oman is possible but long. Dubai International airport is the closest to most neighbourhoods; Al Maktoum airport is much further out, so check which one your ticket uses.

Visa basics

GCC nationals generally do not need a visa to enter the UAE, but entry documents and conditions can change, so confirm with your airline or the official UAE immigration authority before you travel. Residents of GCC countries who hold other nationalities may have different requirements, which can depend on profession and nationality. Check the latest rules for each traveller in your party, including children.

Where to stay

  • Downtown: the glitzy centre, near the giant mall, the fountain show and the observation decks. Ideal for first-time visitors and shoppers.
  • Business Bay: central, canal-side and good value, with quick access to Downtown and the main highways. Popular with families who want space and restaurants nearby.
  • Al Wasl and City Walk: a central, residential area with a pleasant outdoor shopping and dining district. Walkable, relaxed and family-friendly.
  • Dubai Marina and JBR: waterfront living with a long marina walk, beach access, a tram and plenty of restaurants. A lively choice for beach days.
  • Dubai Creek and Creek Harbour: the historic creek side and the newer waterfront with skyline views. Quieter and scenic, with good access to the old quarters and nature spots nearby.
  • Oud Metha: central and residential, with a metro station and a local feel. Convenient for families, and close to major hospitals and Healthcare City.

Things to do with family

  • Watch the fountain show at Downtown and visit the big aquarium and observation decks.
  • Visit the Dubai Frame and the Museum of the Future.
  • Spend a day at Kite Beach or JBR beach, with play areas and shaded spots.
  • Walk Al Fahidi historic district, ride an abra across the creek and browse the gold and spice souks.
  • Book a desert safari with a reputable operator for dunes, camels and an evening camp.
  • Visit seasonal attractions such as Global Village and the Miracle Garden when open.
  • Watch for flamingos near the Ras Al Khor wildlife area, which is close to the Creek Harbour district.

Halal food and prayer

Most restaurants in Dubai serve halal meat and cuisines from across the world are available, but it is sensible to look for halal labels or ask if it matters to you. Mosques are found in every neighbourhood, and malls usually have prayer rooms. During Ramadan, follow local etiquette about eating and drinking in public during daylight hours, and expect changed opening times.

Getting around

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are plentiful and affordable by Gulf standards. The metro (Red and Green lines) is clean and air-conditioned, and the Marina has its own tram. Typical drive times from Dubai International airport are about 15 to 25 minutes to Downtown or Business Bay, 15 to 20 minutes to Creek Harbour or Oud Metha, and 30 to 40 minutes to Dubai Marina, depending on traffic. A rechargeable transit card makes the metro and buses easier. If you rent a car, note that tolls and parking charges apply.

Practical tips

  • Dress modestly in malls, mosques and public areas, and carry a light layer because indoor air-conditioning can be cold.
  • Avoid peak traffic, especially Friday afternoons and weekday rush hours.
  • Heat is serious in summer, so keep children hydrated and plan indoor breaks.
  • Ask before photographing people, and follow local rules on drones.
  • Book popular attractions and desert safaris in advance during school holidays.
  • Confirm the exact address and nearest metro station of your apartment before arrival.
