Kuala Lumpur Area Guide: Where to Stay

Kuala Lumpur is one of the most popular summer destinations for families from the Gulf – a modern, green city with world-class malls, halal food everywhere, easy visas and direct flights from Doha. This guide covers the best areas to stay, getting around and day trips, with our Kuala Lumpur stays listed below.

Best areas to stay in Kuala Lumpur

  • KLCC: the Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Park, Suria KLCC mall and Aquaria KLCC – smart, central and great for families.
  • Bukit Bintang: the shopping and dining heart of the city, with Pavilion, Lot 10 and the food stalls of Jalan Alor, plus monorail and MRT stations.
  • Jalan Ampang: the embassy district just east of KLCC, with larger apartments, pools and better value.

Getting there and getting around

Qatar Airways flies direct from Doha to Kuala Lumpur, a flight of about seven hours. From KLIA, the KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about half an hour, or a car to KLCC and Bukit Bintang takes around 45–60 minutes. In the city, use the LRT, MRT and monorail, or book a car through a ride-hailing app. GCC citizens can visit Malaysia visa-free; other passports should check Malaysia’s official visa rules before travelling.

Halal food and family travel

Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, so halal food is the norm, and there are mosques and prayer rooms in malls across the city. Families love KLCC Park’s playground and water play area, Aquaria KLCC, the KL Bird Park and the huge indoor malls – perfect on hot or rainy afternoons.

Top things to do

  • Visit the Petronas Twin Towers skybridge and observation deck.
  • Climb the steps of Batu Caves, just north of the city.
  • See the colonial buildings around Merdeka Square and shop at Central Market.
  • Enjoy the views from KL Tower.

Day trips from Kuala Lumpur

Drive about an hour up to the cool air of Genting Highlands, visit the grand mosque and lake gardens of Putrajaya, or head further to the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands. Langkawi and Penang are a short flight away for beach and island time.

When to visit

Kuala Lumpur is warm all year, with short afternoon showers. June to August is the main season for Gulf families, and Eid holidays are busy too, so book early for the best apartments.
