Downtown Reykjavík – postcode 101 – is small enough to walk end to end, and it is where you want to be: cafés, restaurants and shops on Laugavegur, Hallgrímskirkja church on the hill, Harpa concert hall and the old harbour on the water, and Tjörnin pond by City Hall.
Why stay downtown
- Walk everywhere: no car needed for the city itself.
- Tours pick up nearby: most Golden Circle, South Coast, northern lights and whale-watching tours collect guests from downtown bus stops.
- Evenings: the best choice of restaurants and bars in Iceland is within a few minutes’ walk.
Getting in from the airport
Keflavík International Airport is about 45–50 minutes from Reykjavík by road. Airport buses run to the BSÍ bus terminal and downtown stops after every arriving flight, and the Blue Lagoon is an easy stop on the way in or out.
When to visit
- September to April: long nights and the best chance of the northern lights.
- June and July: the midnight sun – almost 24 hours of daylight and the busiest, priciest season.
- Shoulder months: May, September and October often give the best balance of price and weather.
