Tbilisi Area Guide: Where to Stay

Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, mixes old cobbled lanes, sulphur bathhouses and balconied houses with modern bridges, cafés and mountain views. It is one of the easiest summer escapes from the Gulf – a short direct flight from Doha, mild summer evenings and great value. This guide covers where to stay and what to see, with our Tbilisi stays listed below.

Best areas to stay in Tbilisi

  • Old Tbilisi: the historic heart, with the Abanotubani sulphur baths, the Peace Bridge, Rike Park and the cable car up to Narikala Fortress.
  • Sololaki & Mtatsminda: elegant old streets between the Old Town and Rustaveli Avenue, close to Freedom Square, the Opera House and the funicular to Mtatsminda Park.
  • Chugureti (Marjanishvili): across the river, with Aghmashenebeli Avenue’s restaurants, the Fabrika creative hub and quick metro links.

Getting in and getting around

Qatar Airways flies direct from Doha to Tbilisi. The airport is about 25–30 minutes from the centre by car, and we can help arrange transfers. In the city, taxis through ride-hailing apps are cheap and easy, and the metro links Old Tbilisi, Freedom Square, Rustaveli and Marjanishvili. GCC citizens can visit Georgia visa-free; other passports should check Georgia’s official visa rules before booking flights.

Top things to do

  • Ride the cable car to Narikala Fortress for views over the Old Town and the river.
  • Relax in a private room at the Abanotubani sulphur baths.
  • Take the funicular to Mtatsminda Park for rides and city views – a favourite with families.
  • Walk Rustaveli Avenue and visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Dry Bridge market.

Day trips from Tbilisi

Visit Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, about 30 minutes away. Drive the Georgian Military Highway to Ananuri, Gudauri and Kazbegi for mountain scenery and Gergeti Trinity Church, or head west to the mineral springs of Borjomi. For the beach, see our Batumi guide.

When to visit

June to September is the main season for Gulf visitors, with warm days and cooler evenings. Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are pleasant and quieter, and winter brings snow trips to Gudauri. Halal restaurants are easy to find in central Tbilisi.
