Batumi is Georgia’s Black Sea resort city – a seafront boulevard lined with palms, modern towers and fountains, a charming old town and green hills behind. It is a favourite summer destination for families from the Gulf. This guide covers where to stay, what to do and when to go, with our Batumi stays listed below.
Best areas to stay in Batumi
- New Boulevard: modern towers on the beachfront, close to the Alphabet Tower, the dolphinarium and the promenade – best for sea views.
- Rustaveli Avenue: across from the beach and beside the lake park, an easy walk from both the New Boulevard and the old town.
- Old Batumi: the historic centre around Europe Square, Piazza and the port, with cafés, restaurants and the seafront a few minutes away.
Getting there and getting around
Batumi International Airport is about 10–15 minutes from the city centre, with flights from Istanbul and seasonal flights from the Gulf; from Tbilisi it is about an hour’s flight or a scenic train ride. Taxis are inexpensive, and the seafront boulevard is perfect for walking and cycling. GCC citizens can visit Georgia visa-free; other passports should check Georgia’s official visa rules before booking flights.
Top things to do
- Walk or cycle Batumi Boulevard along the sea, past the Alphabet Tower and the moving Ali and Nino sculpture.
- Visit the Batumi Botanical Garden on the green hills north of the city.
- Take the cable car for views over the city and the sea, or watch the show at the Batumi Dolphinarium.
- Day trips to Gonio Fortress, the Makhuntseti waterfall and the forests of Mtirala National Park.
When to visit
July and August are peak beach season and the busiest, most expensive months, so book early. June and September are warm and calmer. Batumi has a long-standing Muslim community, and halal food is easy to find in the city.
